Simple pleasures
Published: 31/01/2011 by Carrie Hampton
With few material possessions, most township children manage to convert rubbish into toys and seem to derive great pleasure from doing so. Witness a child taking delight in rolling an old tyre along the road with a stick, or playing with a car fashioned from cardboard and wire. Mothers who are lucky enough to have work, leave their children with grandparents, siblings or at overcrowded crèches, who charge for one month less than you would pay for one meal out.
