Traditional Belgian cuisine has transplanted happily to Cape Town and the climate and setting garnish your eating appetite. At home in South Africa’s prime leisure and shopping spot, the V&A Waterfront, Den Anker has been attracting locals and tourists since 1994, when Belgian master brewer and restaurateur Denis Boukaert took his talents down south. There’s nothing flash about the restaurant. Just authenticity, with an emphasis on quality, fresh seasonal specialities and service, plus a genuinely friendly welcome. Wine magazines’s Top 100 Restaurants in South Africa takes quotes from the tome-sized vistors’ book to sum up Den Anker’s philosophy : “When a Belgian describes the waterzooi is the best he has ever eaten, Swedes wax lyrical about the food and service, and a New Yorker extols the experience as “fine dining at it’s best”, arestuarant must be doing something right. While friendly Den Anker makes no claim to fine dining (although regulars are presented with an amuse bouche), it takes pride in the quality of its trademark traditional dishes”. We cook at Den Anker as the Belgian s cook at home. No ingredients are frozen, we don’t own a microwave and food is pan-fried in real butter. Not only the food entices, the carefully selected wine list features leading South African labels and Den Anker’s range of traditional Belgian beers offers one of life’s most refreshing pleasures. The exclusive Anker beer, brewed to a secret recipe, using the best hops and a fruity yeast, is re-fermented en route to Cape Town as the movement of the ship gently rocks the barrels. Try it. And drink a toast to tradition. |
