UNIQUE HOTEL CELEBRATES THE CREATIVE SPIRIT
Daddy Long Legs is not a backpackers. Neither is it a hotel, lodge, inn, motel, apartment block or trailer park.
It all started from humble beginnings, one simple idea. Offer travellers, spacious, creative, spotless and good value accommodation. Obtaining all these goals together isn’t easy nor is it the norm in the travel industry. Then again our guests aren’t one to follow the beaten path. They are independent, creative, forward thinking travellers….. who don’t want to stay in another regular hotel room in another regular city on another regular holiday.
Staying in the Daddy Long Legs Independent Travellers Hotel is like being part of an interactive art exhibition. The thirteen-room boutique backpacker is quite unlike anything else in South Africa. Not only is each room uniquely decorated by an artist, poet, photographer, designer or musician, but, they were afforded complete freedom to interpret the space as they pleased, resulting in a collection of hotel rooms that are an adventurous, humorous (and sometimes ironic) representation of Cape Town’s contemporary cultural landscape.
Artist Kim Stern, shares her experience of strange bumps in the night in Do Not Disturb, complete with karaoke shower and Braille walls.
Poet, Finuala Dowling, muses on meaning and memories in her room Palimpset and Freshlyground express themselves though music and humour in their room; Scott Johnstone, a recognised design lecturer, and Kirsty Schoombie, one of his ex-students, oversaw the mammoth project.
The Daddy Long Legs concept began with the original Daddy Long Legs Suites (hotel apartments with private kitchens and living area), above popular restaurants, Café Mojito and Khaya Nama in Long Street. The five suites proved so successful that owners Jody Aufrichtig and Nicholas Ferguson decided to expand the concept with a second Daddy Long Legs, also positioned in Long Street, above The African Music Store.
Aufrichting and Ferguson, have invested heavily in property on Long Street and are collective champions of authentic Long Street style; growing a community of tenants that promote originality, without compromising on safety and cleanliness.
Daddy Long Legs is a dream project and yet creative expression has not diluted the necessity for comfort and rest. “It’s about funky, affordable accommodation”, says Aufrichtig. He adds that Daddy Long Legs is, “ a place where you can meet people, have fun whilst you are at it, and – get an awesome night’s rest. Staying at a Daddy Long Legs gives you the opportunity to absorb the creative spirit of Cape Town without leaving your room, so just lie back and enjoy!”
All the beds are hotel quality and are lovingly dressed in clean percale linen. Each room has its own shower and toilet and the communal space boasts a relaxed bar, balcony and frequent entertainment. No one will go hungry, with street level R-Caffe offering breakfasts and lunches and a plethora of dining options are within walking distance.
As an independent travellers hotel, Daddy Long Legs will appeal to those seeking an authentic experience of Cape Town. It is a place to meet others and it is ideally situated for exploring the character and nightlife of the city and it’s surrounds. In much the same way, Daddy Long Legs will be a welcome respite for the local businessperson tired of sterile hotel environments.
Poets, photographers, artists, musicians and designers interpret sterile hotel room décor with humour, imagination, energy and endless creativity.
The communal bar / lounge area is the perfect spot to meet fellow travellers and visiting locals. Relax, order a drink and sit on the balcony to take in the vibrant atmosphere of Long Street; Cape Town’s creative and eccentric heart.
And, at the end of the day, each Daddy Long Legs room offers good quality beds, cotton linen and a private shower and toilet. Boutique Backpacker prices, means you will return again and again.
It’s a place where you can lay your hat and swing a cat. It’s a place where you can meet like minded explorers and new friends. It’s always en-suite and on a vibrant street. Its interactive good, clean fun with a shower and not a bath.
Sweet dreams!! |
