Stellenbosch - “Heart of the Winelands” As a premier tourist destination, Stellenbosch’s history is reflected in neo-Dutch, Georgian and modern Victorian architecture. Oak trees bear witness to its proud and dignified heritage. The town on the banks of a river in the premier wine producing Jonkershoek Valley is encircled by majestic mountains. Stellenbosch is the ideal location from which to explore the winelands, Cape Town, the Peninsula and the many tourist attractions the Western Cape has to offer. Wine Route As one of the oldest wine routes in the country with 110 farms and cellars, it attracts wine-lovers and tourists from around the world. The wines are of a high standard and regularly win International awards. Many farms have beautifully maintained homes and gardens that are open to the public. Wine tours are a must for visitors. Academic Stellenbosch With roots going back to 1866 and a student population of 18 000, Stellenbosch University is one of the oldest universities in South Africa the finest academic institutions in Africa. The Boland College for Further Education & Training was started as a Technical College in 1918. Practical courses are offered mainly for the service industry and in particularly the hospitality industry. Activities The magnificent hills surrounding the town offer unequalled opportunities for hiking, abseiling, mountaineering, cycling, off-road biking jogging hang-gliding, horse riding, camping, white water canoeing/ rafting, picnicing and other sports and recreational activities which can be arranged through the Bureau and members. Stellenbosch has three excellent golf courses and another six within a 30km radius. Stellenbosch on Foot Historic guided walks take place twice daily starting at Tourism Bureau in Market Street. Take this opportunity to explore the rich heritage of “The Village of the Oaks”. In summer Twilight Walks and spine tingling Ghost Walks are offered by specially trained guides. Culinary Delights. Every taste is catered for from local traditional to cordon bleu International. The side-walk cafes and friendly meet-&-eat pubs add to the relaxed pleasures of the town. Information on these are available from the Bureau. Shopping Stellenbosch boasts all the shops and malls of a large city including curio shops, antique shops and is host to regular street markets. At Oom Samie se Winkel one can purchase anything from sweets to alcohol, clothing and fruit. This shop is a true reflection of how locals use to trade 200 years ago. Township Experience Offering excellent opportunities for the visitor looking for a cultural, or traditional experience Stellenbosch is home to Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Idas Valley and Jamestown, all vibrant townships, where food, crafts and genuine African hospitality can be experienced.
