Parklands College & Christopher Robin Pre-Primary

“Reaching Outwards, Growing Minds, Building Futures”

Christopher Robin Pre-Primary forms the foundation of Parklands College where one is immediately aware of the nurturing and genuine care offered to each and every learner.  The impressive environment enhances the learners’ positive attitude to life-long learning, where the classrooms are alive with excited chatter of little people as they develop their skills and expand their minds.

An interactive and dynamic learning environment is provided in the Preparatory faculty where many opportunities are offered for learners to excel. The College is a forerunner in educational innovation where learning and growth are interactive and dynamic encapsulated in a quote by Martin Vanbee: ‘The kind of world that we live in tomorrow depends, not partially, but entirely upon the type and quality of the education of our children today.’

The Secondary Faculty continues the tradition of top class education. Learners write the Independent Examination Board (IEB) GET and FET Certificates in Grades 9 and Grade 12, respectively. Past learners have proudly achieved a 100% pass rate in these examinations, where the majority of them have progressed to tertiary institutions locally and internationally, in order to further their studies.

Upholding expectations and trusting in the ability and willingness of our learners to stretch and meet their goals is encouraged throughout all spheres of College life.  The College values its learners and, in return, expects them to uphold the Parklands College Vision and Mission.

The College is aligned with the objectives of the NQF which creates an integrated national framework for learning achievements, encapsulating a number of key principles that underpin the NQF: integration, access, mobility, progression, quality, redress, and development (of the individual and society).

Mission  We are committed to promoting a culture of learning and thus an improved quality of life for the youth of South Africa through an education that embraces: Non-discrimination, Guidance of learners and learner support, Critical, independent and creative thinking, Information technology, Nurturing and encouraging talents, Flexibility and progression, A passion for learning, Recognition and value of our Human resource capacity and Ethical practices

Visual and Performing Arts  Drama & Music form an integral part of the curriculum where learners enlist in individual and group tuition in string and woodwind instruments contributing to Orchestra, Junior and Senior Choirs and Vocal Ensemble.  All forms of dance are offered. Learners participate in various Eisteddfods and examinations.  The flexible art syllabus includes exposure to a variety of visual art forms vital to the development of free expression. Art tours and outings are regularly arranged.

Counselling and Career Guidance  Our resident educational psychologist supports learners with planning their futures and assisting with personal issues.  Our Life Skills Programmes focus on development of the self through the experiences of others, inter-personal relationships, preparation for challenges faced outside the safe environment of College and home, career guidance and suitably linked subject choices.

Tutor System  From Grade 7, each learner is allocated a Tutor, for guidance, direction and support attending to the needs of the individual.

Sport & Excursions   The College Campus boasts fully developed sporting facilities. Team sport is introduced from Pre-Primary in order to promote a life long interest in outdoor activities. Sport develops a sense of healthy competition, camaraderie and personal growth, therefore coaches are appointed for their specific skills and genuine love for the sporting code. The College regularly hosts international teams and embarks on national and international sporting tours.

Information & Communication Technology

CompTIA Training, Lotus Academic Partner (LAP), Microsoft Authorised Academic Training Partner (AATP), International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Training and Testing Centre

Information Technology is introduced from Pre-Primary level through a modern, pervasive and wireless information network. This includes internet access, e-mail from grade 1, printing, file sharing and storage, dial-up access, laptop enabled learning environment, computer programming, an internally developed Intranet for curriculum delivery and digitised workflow business processes.

An interesting development is the partnering of Apple Computers and Parklands College. This partnership will have a major role in the establishment of a new Design and Technology Department, including facilities, in both the Preparatory and Secondary Faculties. We are also purchasing an Apple server to facilitate educator- and learner-based pod-casting from the classroom. This service will allow our learners to recap on work or concepts they may have missed during a lesson by replaying the lesson on an i-pod or home computer. We are very excited about this development as it adds a new dimension to our Technology Assisted Learning (Laptop) programme.

Our technology department offers: Laptop classroom Learning • Wireless connectivity to our network • International Computer Drivers Licence (ICDL) certification from Grade 7 • International A+ Technician certification from Grade 10 • The Inet+ CompTIA certification • Additional International IT certifications from Grade 10 • Computer Studies HG/SG • 24 hour Internet access • Local and global e-mail through personal mailboxes • Educational / Multimedia applications • Calendaring and Scheduling • Word-processing and Spread-sheeting • Computer Graphics and Design • Colour and B/W laser printing • Remote access / Dial-up access • Programming Languages (JAVA)
