Artscape Theatre Centre

Between Table Mountain and Table Bay , the City of Cape Town boasts a cosmopolitan mix of historic and modern landmarks. One of these is the Artscape Theatre Centre on the Foreshore. It is home to the independent companies such as the Cape Town Opera , the Cape Town City Ballet, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and Jazzart Dance Studio and a constantly growing number of local and international performing arts companies. With its close proximity to Cape Town's central business district, the new International Convention Centre and the V & A Waterfront, Artscape is ideally situated to serve the Cape's film, tourist, entertainment, conference and exhibition industries. The auditoria, foyers and piazza are utilised for a range of activities including conferences, lectures, exhibitions, corporate launches, banquets, raves, photographic and film shoots. It is one of a few venues in Southern Africa with the facilities to stage international musicals such as Les Miserables and Cats. Other productions, for young and old, include the touring spectaculars such as Spirit of Dance, Tap Dogs, the St Petersburg State Academic Ballet , to local drama, Cry, The Beloved Country, community and children's productions. With vision and passion, through thick and thin, Michael Maas has transformed this theatre from a production house presenting a limited range of art forms, to a playhouse which celebrates all forms of art and hosts a range of entertainment and brought the company thus far. Artscape's vision to be a centre of creative excellent is based on three legs: the provision of excellent services through the theatre, its stages and services; the facilitation and promotion of all performing arts genres including work by inter alia Cape Town Opera, Cape Town City Ballet, Jazzart Dance Studio and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra; the development of audiences and education, manufacturing services and the staging of productions. Since the turn of the millennium the centre has been renamed as the Artscape Theatre Centre, formerly the Nico Theatre Centre and has undergone a few structural changes. The Opera Foyer was revamped to make a home for the radio station Fine Music Radio and to make it more convenient for the public, the Box Office was relocated from downstairs to the upper marble foyer. The ex Box Office space was turned into a Resource Centre, supported by Golden Arrow and the Artscape Audience Development & Education Department and Nino's el Teatro has taken up the space in the restaurant. The entertainment line-up for the next three months are as follows: the operas Faust and Cosi fan Tutte, plus two concert performances of La Damnation de Faust by Berlioz, the Jazzart Dance Studio's Spring season, Rock Legends direct from London, for young and old Winnie the Pooh, improvisation and side splitting laughs, Theatresports and for romance and passion, a ballet programme, Classic Highlights.
