Aquila Private Game Reserve

AQUILA CAPE TOWN’S AFFORDABLE SAFARI EXPERIENCE The prestigious 4-star Aquila Private Game Reserve, offers 4 star luxury in eco-friendly cottages on 4,500 hectares of Southern Karoo highlands. Aquila has quickly established itself as the closest premier safari destination to Cape Town, with a good range of African game animals including lion and rhino. It is a mere two-hour drive from Cape Town. Aquila is steeped in history with Khoi San rock art dating back 10,000 years, to Anglo Boer war stories from the late eighteen hundreds. This adds an interesting aspect to your Aquila visit, which can include game drives in open 4x4's, horseback and quad bike safaris - which are proving very popular. You can combine these safari options, in between a scrumptious buffet lunch. Stay in Aquila's 4-star semi-luxury cottages or the spectacular honeymoon suite, that boasts a sunken rock jacuzzi. Every conceivable comfort has been thought of in the rooms such as romantic roaring log fires during winter months, wooden viewing decks, air conditioning, percale linen, mini bars, rock bathrooms & outdoor rock showers. Using only natural materials for the buildings Aquila has made a solid commitment and effort to the environment. Aquila is also set to become a unique wedding destination with unparalleled scenic backdrops. Food is prepared by Aquila's renowned Executive Chef, with meals eaten in the atmospheric thatched Boma Restaurant. Lazy afternoons or pre and post dinner drinks are enjoyed in the new colonial Cigar Bar lounge, which is the ideal place to relax, read a book or view the majestic reserve unveiled before of you. There is also a fully equipped 80-seater Conference Centre, for safari-based seminars with a difference. The safari and outdoor experience at Aquila is its drawcard. The reserve is constantly expanding its African animal population, which will include three lion cubs, buffalo and several sleek cheetah. Aquila already boasts the closest lions to Cape Town, plus animals rarely seen in the Western Cape like rhino, hippo, crocodiles, giraffes, gemsbok and warthog. Grazing animals include black & blue wildebeest, Burchell's zebra, eland, red hartebeest, springbok, steenbok, klipspringer, blesbok and ostriches. Other carnivores include mountain leopard, caracal (lynx), bat-eared fox and black backed jackal, and baboon eat just about anything. Future plans are to introduce Elephant back safaris through the indigenous game, that have enjoyed the protection of this reserve since 1986. Aquila is a year round destination as the rare renosterveld terrain of the Karoo takes on a different mood, shape and form throughout the seasons. The flower season from July through to September is most spectacular, when the reserve displays a splendid technicolour carpet of Karoo flowers.
