Cape Town beaches are indeed some of the most beautiful and natural beaches in the wolrd. Choosing a beach in Cape Town should depend not just on your personal preference, but on which way the wind is blowing. The perfect beach of yesterday, might be your worst nightmare today. As a general rule, if the southeaster is blowing in Cape Town, sunbathers should head for the Atlantic side.
Another determining factor is whether you want to swim, be sporty, sunbathe or just be seen. The Atlantic water in Cape Town is so cold (8-14°C) that however hot the bodies, most are loath to take a dip without a 7milimetre wetsuit. The beaches of Cape Town's False Bay may not be so chic, but the water is warmer (11-22°C), and are usually safer for swimming.
Cape Town Beach Tips
• There are no umbrellas on beaches (except for hire at Camp's Bay) • Beware of strong currents and undertow • Swim where are other people are swimming • Never underestimate how fast the weather and wind can change • Enjoy watersports but take advice from experts and locals first • Around the coast are sea rock pools, constructed for safe for swimming at low tide
