Cape Town food variety of today is the result of the competitiveness of local markets and the sophistication of leading international chefs have pushed development of new food products towards a wider range of choices in Cape Town. South African wines have moved with increasing stature onto the world market, and the 'local is lekker' food philosophy means that chefs prefer to use local products, such as boutique cheeses, olives & olive oils, game meat and birds.
In May, the Cape Gourmet Festival is a fortnight long extravaganza of fine Cape Town food and wine, often starring leading international chefs. The annual September V&A Waterfront - Cape Times Wine Festival has led to a complementary Cheese Festival. (See the section in our travel guide entitled 'Restaurant Guide', for a list of Food & Wine events).
Alternatively and in case you are only interested in cape town food, we recommend the new Cape Town Food book, which you can order here.
