Cape Town lies at the head of a small peninsula, which dips into the sea at the south-western tip of Africa, (not quite the southern-most point, which is a couple of hours drive east at Cape Agulhas). If you head south from Cape Point, the next stop is Antarctica, so it is not too difficult to lose orientation in Cape Town.

The Table Mountain range runs down the length of the Cape Peninsula and is the reason you cannot always go direct to your chosen destination in Cape Town. To keep your orientation, you have to follow one of the roads that run either side of the mountains, and then cross at one of the few passes or valleys that exist all around Cape Town.

Well maintained arterial roads head out of Cape Town; east towards the Garden Route, north along the West Coast, north-east into the mountainous Cape Winelands and south to Cape Point. To head west you will need a boat.  Additional information regarding orientation can also be found in the 'Getting Around' section within our tourist information online centre.
