The annual Mother City Queer Project fancy dress extravaganza is a wildly creative art form, where costume and partying take on an entirely new meaning. The 2003 'Kitsch Kitchen' theme inspired such costumes as; Earl Grey and the Tea Hags, Frigid and Unfrigid Magnets, Condom-Mints and several Naked Chefs! Many revellers say they preferred the alluring dark corners of Cape Town's Castle to the open-plan Convention Centre, but the Mother City Queer Project tends to try out a new venue each year.

Cape Town takes the gay market seriously, and an events research organisation was hired to quantify the impact of the Mother City Queer Project on the city's economy. They found that of the 6,500 revellers attending the 2003 party, 12% hailed from abroad, with 67% of party-goers specifically in town for this event. Research also revealed that pink travellers and visitors to the Mother City Queer Project usually stay in Cape Town for more than a month.
