A visit to the South African rugby museum has become a regular port of call for locals and tourists visiting the city of Cape Town. The museum is on the ground floor of the Sport Science Institute, a grubber kick from the magnificent Fedsure Park Newlands stadium. The SA rugby museum is crammed full of activities, exhibitions and insights into the wonderful world of rugby and is a worthy addition to South Africa´s crown of "rugby world champions". The museum features rotating exhibitions and special attractions, which will fascinate both local and international visitors whether they be players, administrators or supporters.

The number one attractionin the South African rugby museum in Cape Town is of course is a replica of the Webb Ellis Cup - won by the Springboks at Ellis Park in 1995. The special World Cup exhibit includes the results from all three World Cup tournaments to date and the emotively powerful theme song "World in Union".

Other highlights and activitiesin the South African rugby museum in Cape Town  include an innovative push-button radio commentary of famous tries and incidents on the field from the 1950s, 60s and 70s before the advent of television. Visitors can relive some of the magical moments in Springbok rugby brought alive by such famous voices as Gerhard Viviers and Charles Fortune.

Have you ever wondered about the origins of the Springbok emblem? See how it has changed six times in nearly 100 hundred years. Learn about the struggle towards unity in South African rugby and the origins of the four administrative bodies SARB, SARU, SARA and SARFF which came together in 1991 to form the consolidated SARFU - this includes blazers, caps, jerseys and ties of these bodies displayed together for the first time.

You can also sit in old wooden Newlands rugby benches and watch videos of famous tries and games. Ever wondered how the Springboks have fared against the major rugby playing nations in the world? Come and check all the results and details of matches between South Africa and New Zealand, Australia, England, France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Argentina.

What about the game itself ? Have you ever wondered how a rugby ball is made? How it has changed shape over time? A visit to the South African rugby museum in Cape Town will give you the answers. Another special display depicts how rugby boots are made, together with different kicking techniques, and the boots of some of South Africa´s great goal kickers including Naas Botha, Joel Stransky and Frik du Preez.

Find out just why Joel kicked that magical drop goal in 1995. Another display, which is sure to be popular to budding Springboks, shows the career path of Springbok stars from schoolboy, to club level, to provincial team and eventually to the Springboks. The display combines Coca-Cola Craven Week, every senior club in the country, the 14 provincial unions and the ultimate - wearing the Springbok jersey.

And then there are the rugby caps, rugby´s most cherished items of memorabilia and the symbol of the greatest achievement in rugby - playing for your country. Our priceless collection includes the most ancient in the country and over 100 years old, from South Africa´s first ever international way back in 1891. The South African rugby museum in Cape Town  is open from 10:00 to 16:30 from Monday to Friday with special openings on some Newlands match days.
