Description
Meerendal has been planted to vines since the early 1700s and today boasts some of the country's more ancient vines, including the Cape's second oldest Pinotage plantings, which stand side by side with carefully selected modern clones. Recently bought by a consortium of South African businessmen, they are dedicated to re-establishing Meerendal as a benchmark for quality in the South African Wine Industry. Meerendal Estate sits on the south-eastern slopes of the Tygerberg. Its wonderful rich, red soils combine with perfectly moderated temperatures and airflow from the cool summer winds to yield grapes of great character . "Meerendal can produce both white and red wines comparable with the best in the world" Dawie le Roux (viticultural consultant) Meerendal farm was granted to Jan Meerland in 1702 and records show that some 60 000 vines were growing on the property as early as 1712. Oom Willie Starke bought Meerendal in 1929 and he replaced the extensive wheat fields with red vines in the 1930's. His son, Kosie was responsible for introducing the Pinotage and Shiraz vineyards used today to produce the best known of the Meerendal vintages. The farm is now cared for by Kosie's widow, Christa, son William and long time associate Soon Potgieter.
