Description
James Edgar Murdock came to South Africa from England in 1896 and decided to set up a jewellery business. In 1897 he opened Murdock's Watchmakers and Jewellers in a small shop on the corner of Parliament and Longmarket Streets in Cape Town.
Through the years, eminent customers of Murdocks have included Cecil John Rhodes, King George and Queen Frederika of Greece. Cecil John Rhodes, apparently declined to alight from his vehicle and make the short journey into the shop, but insisted instead that the shop come to him.
The classic contemporary Murdocks store, situated in the heart of the bustling V&A Waterfront offers traditional as well as modern fine jewellery pieces. The best of South Africa and Africa's mineral wealth has been used to create pieces of rare beauty, with flawless diamonds set into the finest gold or platinum. There is a fine tradition of service that is offered at Murdocks and there are many clients like Rhodes, where the jewellery is taken to the client! Bvlgari, a combination of Italian style with traditional Swiss excellence; Jaeger-LeCoultre, creators of masterpiece watches for the discerning connoisseur & Chopard, representing creativity, quality craftsmanship and exclusivity.
Murdocks Jewellers supports Little Angels, home for abandoned and HIV babies in Cape Town to create a range of jewellery tailor-made to fit babies as well as adults. Proceeds from the sale of the jewellery are donated to Little Angels.
